A Technical Comparison of Selected Urdu Fonts

This article is an effort of Technical Comparison of Selected Urdu Fonts. The purpose of the article is to identify computer fonts in Nastaliq script that meet traditional calligraphy technical standards. Five fonts have been studied in the context and yardstick of traditional Nastaliq Calligraphy. These are Pak Nastaliq, JameelNooriNastaliq, Faiz Lahori,Alqalam Taj Nastaliq and MehrNastaliq Web. All five fonts are analyzed against selected technical standards of traditional calligraphy of Nastaliq. The study concludes that Mehr Nastaliq Web is the best font among them, because it competes and completes the fluency, beauty and traditional calligraphically rules of Nastaliq. Kasheeda characters and compound characters are also added to it, that give natural look and feel of calligraphy.
